Summer Associate Program

The Summer Associate Program at Carmona Law, PA is our single most important source of associate hiring.

During each school year, Carmona Law, PA chooses a selected group of law students to participate in its summer associate program. Most of the students participating in our summer program have completed their second year of law school, although we generally hire a more limited number of first year students as well. The Firm relies on the summer associate program to satisfy most of its entry-level hiring needs. Summer associates at Carmona Law, PA experience first-hand the firm's strong commitment to excellence, diversity, pro bono work, and professional development.

For that reason, we maintain high standards in the selection process. We recognize that the program should give each summer associate a realistic impression of what the people and practice of Carmona Law, PA are all about. To that end, our program is designed to help us learn as much about you, and to help you learn as much about us as possible.

Summer Associates: What it's Really Like

Our summer associates typically spend at least the first eight weeks of the summer with us. The Summer Associate Committee, comprised of partners and associates, oversees the work of our summer associates, as well as their integration into the Firm. Summer associates work side-by-side with our attorneys on actual cases, and the contributions of our summer associates are respected and valued. We also have a variety of events throughout the summer that allow our summer associates to get to know our attorneys on a more informal basis.

We balance our summer program with activities in the community as well as full of extraordinary professional opportunities. A number of social activities are planned for our summer associates, such as informal after-work gatherings to help acquaint our summer associates with the Orlando and Kissimmee area, while interacting with peers and attorneys in more relaxed settings. The social events also serve to help our summer associates get to know each other better as they progress through the program.

Some of the activities have included:

  • Attending NBA Basketball games
  • Enjoying Walt Disney World Parks
  • Enjoying Universal Studios Parks
  • Working at local volunteer events
  • Visiting various galleries and museums
  • Participating in a bowling competition
  • Shopping at world renown outlets and malls
  • Enjoying the great Orlando night life
  • Enjoying Florida white sand beaches and surf spots.
  • Mock Trial

We offer a real life component and allow or summer associates to have hands-on experience in drafting legal research memorandums, negotiating settlements, taking depositions, and trying cases in mock trial. You’ll have opportunities to learn about a wide range of the Firm’s practice areas, and the specialized skills each one demands. You will learn from the Firm’s attorneys who can make the law come alive through examples, personal experience, and anecdotes.

Realistic View of Practice

Our summer associate program strives to give our summer associates a realistic view of practicing law at Carmona Law, PA and to help them bridge the gap between law school and practice. Our summer associates work on real projects for real clients. They meet with clients and attend mediations, negotiations and trials. They draft documents, write briefs and help prepare for trials. Summer associates are encouraged to seek out particular assignments from lawyers within the firm as their interests dictate. Varying the assignments enables both the summer associate and the firm to get a more complete picture upon which to comfortably base an employment decision.

The workload in our summer associate program can be intense and it is designed this way to allow our summer associates to experience firsthand what is expected of a first year associate. Summer Associates do not have a billable hour requirement, and we do not expect them to dedicate their entire summer to us. However, we do want the experience to be realistic.

Your typical day will be approximately 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If a case demands it, you may occasionally work with the attorneys beyond normal business hours, staying late on a weeknight or coming to the office on a weekend. Those instances will be rare, but are important because they give valuable insights into the demands of the profession. At the end of the summer, we want to know what can be expected from you as an associate, and we want you to know what you can expect from us as a firm.

Assignments & Mentoring

All summer associates are assigned both a senior and a junior mentor who facilitate their time in the firm, and provide insight into life in the legal profession. We match assignments with each summer associate’s stated interests, and offer them a real opportunity to test their interests in their preferred areas. If a summer associate has a particular area of interest, extra effort is made to provide exposure to that practice group. As part of the learning phase of the program, we provide the summer associates with constant constructive feedback on their work throughout the summer. The mentor actively works to develop summer associate’s writing, research, and advocacy skills as the summer progresses. Summer associates receive formal evaluations and reviews, and we emphasize informal feedback provided through everyday work experiences.

Education & Training

Summer associates are invited to attend a variety of training programs. They may also attend informal gatherings with local judges, and attend various depositions and hearings and other informational events. Summer associates also attend luncheons that focus on various aspects of the firm’s management, practice groups, pro bono work, and such practical issues as achieving a healthy work/life balance. Our lawyers often bring summer associates to court proceedings, oral arguments, closings, and client meetings to permit them to observe and learn how Carmona Law P.A interact with its clients. Each lawyer who gives an assignment is directed to discuss it with the summer associate and to provide a thorough written evaluation of the work to the summer associate. Finally, summer associates also critique us. We take into account the constructive input of our summer associates in designing our summer program.
